[ME/CFS Centre] The ME/CFS Centre in Second Life Redesign is underway!

Hi everyone,

Thanks to those who made it to the meeting today.

As of tomorrow, the current Centre will be removed and the new redesign will begin. A meeting area will be created immediately and meetings can continue to take place as normal.

Our new designer Gwenette Writer will be building on our land and we will be gathering your input throughout the whole process.

The main changes you will find are a more open, organic, relaxing feel, which incorporates nature into the design.

- We will make use of the waterfall and beach area. There will be a stream flowing from the waterfall to the beach, meandering through the Centre, where we hope to have fishing.
- There will be an interactive library where people will be able to add their own comments, hoping to make this a growing repository of personal experiences about ME/CFS
- Art will still be an important part of the centre
- There will be relaxation areas such as a Tai Chi sphere
- There will be enjoyable and fun activities for those who requested them
- There will of course be the meeting area, and also an easy way to convert this into larger presentations

We will be continuing to have open discussions and gathering your feedback about the changes. Please feel free to write any observations to this list or me personally.

The national common entrance test (CET) slated by the Medical Council of India [ Images ] (MCI) on May 13, 2012, for admissions to the MBBS courses across all government and private medical colleges across the country is off, at least for this year, because of the Supreme Court deferring a hearing against it to January.

Once again, students aspiring to study medicine will have to run from one city to another to appear in the multiple entrance tests. Though the MCI officials said it may not be so in 2013, it is still hope against hope as a score of state governments and private medical colleges do not want to give up their control over admissions.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which was entrusted with holding the CET, on Tuesday announced that it will hold its own All-India Pre-Medical Test (PMT) on that date, while the states will be holding their own PMTs. The CBSE's preliminary exam will be on April 1. The eligibility conditions and syllabus will remain the same as in 2011.

CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi said, "There will be no national CET in 2012. The CBSE will hold its own AIPMT and the states will hold their own entrance tests in 2012."

"The Supreme Court is yet to give the final decision on deferring the test. It will hear the matter in January first week," MCI secretary Sangeeta Sharma explained.

The CBSE announcement came within a week of the health ministry filing an affidavit in the Supreme Court seeking permission to hold the common exam from 2013, instead of 2012 as earlier allowed by the court. A number of state governments and private medical colleges are opposing a single national entrance test.

The MCI had announced the national test on November 17, only after the health ministry asked it to draw up the syllabus for the common test that the CBSE was to hold in English and Hindi. Gujarat, Maharashtra [ Images ], Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal [ Images ] were among states that wanted the test also in the regional languages.

At present, the CBSE conducts its pre-medical test to admit students to the 15 per cent seats under the all-India quota at government medical colleges in the states. For the remaining 85 per cent seats, the state-level tests are held.

I also had trouble so I just typed in Psychology Today and then used their online search option by typing in Holiday Stress and Illness. It worked.

Medical Council of India (MCI) proposes National Eligibility Test for PG Admissions

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) will allow plus two students to sit in a single entrance examination to get admission to almost all medical colleges in the country, including private medical colleges, from 2012 academic year.

A single merit list will be created for close to 35,000 MBBS seats across the country, which will show state, minorities and SC/ST quotas.
The entrance examination would cover all medical colleges except the Armed Forces Medical College and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and thePost Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh may be outside the NEET's purview as these institutes were set up by separate laws
While the MCI will not touch the management quota, it insists that even management quota candidates should come from the national merit list. The objective was to set up a standard for basic medical education. The minority institutions would continue to have a quota and a private college could have a management quota. But the reserved seats would have to be filled on the basis of merit

Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, September 28, 2011 /India PRwire/ -- Consciousness for quality health is deplorable in government hospitals in the country. Out of a total number of 650 government hospitals, including District and Primary Health Care Centers, only 8 are NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare providers) Accreditated informed Dr. Girdhar J. Gyani, Head of National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers in India and Secretary General of Quality Council of India while addressing the gathering in Star Hospitals on Wedenesday morning just before presenting NABH Accreditation Certificate to Star Hospitals.

Star Hospitals is the 5th Hospital in Andhra Pradesh and 78th in the country to have got accreditation. The certificate was presented by Dr. Girdhar J. Gyani, in a function specially organised for the purpose. It was also the day of Star Hospitals Foundation. Exactly 3 years back it was founded and it is one of the very few hospitals in the country or probably only in the country to have got NABH Accreditation within two and half years of its formation, added Dr. Gopichan Mannam, Managing Director of Star Hospitals.

Speaking further Dr. Girdhar J. Gyani added that while country boasts of 40,000 small, medium and big corporate hospitals, it is irony that only 111 have got NABH Accreditation. On the government hospitals front while we have 650 government hospitals both including District and Primary Health Centers, only 8 hospitals have been awarded NABH Accreditation. None of these hospitals are from the state of Andhra Pradesh. While other states like Gujarat, Tamilnadu, Kerala and Karnataka are far ahead of Andhra Pradesh. Even the state of Jammu & Kashmir is ahead of Andhra Pradesh, he stated.

While 15 government hospitals in Tamil Nadu started the NABH process, 2 have got NABH. Similarly in Kerala 19 started the process and 2 got, in Gujarat 29 started and 3 have been awarded the accreditation. Your neighboring state in Karnataka is pushing for the accreditation of 12 government hospitals in its first phase, he said. Among private and government put together 526 hospitals are actively pursuing accreditation in the country today. And he expects nearly 500 hosptials to get accreditation in the next five years.

In most of the developed countries like America, Australia and Canada, 90 per cent of the hospitals are Accredited. Dr. Girdhar urged the state health minister to make a compulsory rule for hospitals who apply for empanelment under Aarogyasri must have NABH Accreditation. This practice in vogue in CGHS ECHS, he said.

NABH Accreditation helps hospitals and patients in many ways. In a study Quality Council of India done in six hospitals they found that the infection rate after NABH accreditation is granted has come down to 5 to 7%, while the average prevailing rate across the globe was 18 to 40%. Which means, NABH helps dramatically to improve the quality of health care delivery. He also said that it was found by them that the average duration of hospitalisation has also come down in NABH Accreditated hospitals.

Star Hospitals, a Hyderabad based 130 bedded tertiary health care facility is accorded NABH accreditation (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare providers). Dr. Giridhar Gyani Secretary General, Quality Council of India was Guest of Honour and presented NABH Certificate to Dr. Gopichand Mannam, Managing Director of Star Hospitals. The function is attended by hospital staff and other guests.

Set up on 28th September in the year 2008, today Star Hospitals is the name to reckon in the city for quality health care services. It has done more than 4500 Open Heart Surgeries right from its inception. It's Managing Director Dr. Gopichand Mannam has a rare distinction of performing more than 16000 Heart Surgeries in his career so far. A record performance not many can achieve in a lifetime career.

Though 3 years is a too short a time, Star Hospitals has made an indelible mark and emerged as a key provider in Healthcare. Stating further, Dr. Gopichand added that besides infrastructure, it is important for the patient to know that the hospital follows documented process for its healthcare services. Patient care goes beyond just clinical areas. Support activities such as test, medicines, nursing care, infection control practices, training and many more such things count a lot. A quality-conscious hospital should define all such activities internally, document the same, and impart necessary training to the staff. These documented activities include detailed job responsibilities, work instructions, checklists and quality indicators for the staff to follow.

So how will the patient know about these processes? How do patients know these details? Where are these details available? Do they enquire with hospital? Patients/attendants are not educated enough to understand many processes hospitals follow. Accreditation is the key. It ensures and certifies that NABH Accredited hospital strictly adheres to the laid down practices and guidelines. So a patient who visits a NABH accredited hospital is reassured that he or she is provided with safest and scientific based processes and procedures.

NABH has designed an exhaustive healthcare standard for hospitals and healthcare providers in the country. This standard consists of stringent 500 plus objective elements for the hospital to achieve in order to get the NABH accreditation. To comply with these standard elements, the hospital will need to have a process-driven approach in all aspects of hospital activities - from registration, admission, pre-surgery, peri-surgery and post-surgery protocols, medication procedures, discharge from the hospital to follow-up with the hospital after discharge including 24x7 emergency care. ISLAMABAD: The cost of basic food items increased by 74 per cent in three years (from June 2008 to 2011), leading to increased hunger and malnutrition, according to official findings.
Based on data provided by the Federal Bureau of Statistics, Ministry of Food and other public sector organisations, the Planning Commission has noted that "given the continued sharp increase in prices of staple, mainly wheat, vegetable ghee and sugar, during the second half of 2010, and follow up in the first half of 2011, the number of people suffering from chronic hunger is likely to have increased further".
The cost of 2,150 calories, needed to keep the body and soul together, increased from Rs960 to Rs1,670, a hike of 74 per cent. The report said the price of wheat flour increased by 78pc in three years and of sugar by 163pc.
The prices of meat, pulses and milk went up by 103pc, 89pc and 85pc, respectively. A comparatively low increase was witnessed in prices of rice, 44pc, vegetable ghee, 66pc, and vegetables 39pc.
General estimates suggest an additional five per cent per year increase in the number of undernourished people over the national estimates of the proportion of the undernourished in 2009 to 2011. Much of this is attributed to increase in food prices.
"Therefore, estimated proportion of undernourished children will be around 50pc as of 2011," added the commission in its annual report on change in the cost of food basket 2010-11.
It said the overall consumption estimates during the recent past had shown a decline from 1,900 calories to 1,600 calories, implying that the millennium development goals on hunger and malnutrition envisaged at 20pc in 2015 against the prevalent estimate of 40pc is becoming a challenge and there are clear signs that the target will be missed.
"Given the national scenario, conventionally agreed key risk factors underlying causes of vulnerability, such as poverty hunger, income inequality and now food price have added new dimensions to vulnerability," said the planning commission.
Pakistan suffers from high rates of childhood malnutrition and appears to have made little progress over the last two decades in addressing the issue, "with 38 per cent of under five children being underweight and 12 per cent severely underweight".
The report indicated interesting changes in the essential food basket.
It said energy intake declined from 1,900 calories in 2001-02 to 1,650 in 2007-08, the calories availability steadily increased to the level of 2,590 in 2010-11 from the consumption level of 1,650 in 2007-08. The pricing had the most devastating impact.
The price of wheat, major food staple accounting for 60pc of the poor's energy consumption, registered an increase of 200pc between 2000 and 2011 and that of vegetable ghee by 227pc.
The prices of gram and sugar had an irregular increasing trend, with an overall increase of 133pc and 174pc, respectively.
The price of wheat increased from Rs10 per kg in 2000-2001 to Rs30 per kg in 2010-11.
Within the overall affected households, those headed by women suffer more from rising food prices in terms of declining food consumption.
Such households tend to spend a larger proportion of income on food than men-headed households and thus they are hit harder by the impact of high food prices on consumption.
The commission said that household food insecurity remained a major cause of under-nutrition affecting large sections of the population in Pakistan. Therefore, public distributions system and related income transfer schemes must act as an instrument to reduce chronic malnutrition and household food insecurity.

About two years ago I was refused boarding an Aer Arann plane with, and subsequently without, my mobility scooter.

The case was brought to the Equality Tribunal last January. The outcome of the case is outlined in this document, link added below.

In short, it has been established that I was discriminated against on grounds of disability.

Please note that at this point, Aer Arann still has the option to appeal the case.

1. Introduction

Welcome to the first volume of the Analytics Benchmarking Newsletter!

This month, we are replacing the standard "benchmarking" report in your Google Analytics account with data shared in this newsletter. We are using this newsletter as an experiment to surface more useful or interesting data to Analytics users. Data contained here comes from all websites which have opted-in anonymous data sharing with Google Analytics. Only those website administrators which have enabled this anonymous data sharing will receive this "benchmarking" newsletter.

You may be wondering, how many websites are in this "anonymous data sharing" pool? Currently, hundreds of thousands, and we've endeavored to make all of the metrics here statistically significant.

The date range of comparison for this newsletter is from November 1, 2010 - February 1, 2011. Comparison is done with data from November 1, 2009 - February 1, 2010. Absolute metrics such as total # visits, pageviews, or conversions for all opted-in websites are not reported.

To simplify the prose, the phrase "websites" will represent "websites which have opted into anonymous data sharing with Google Analytics" for the rest of this newsletter.

2. Site Metrics

Compared to a year ago, websites have seen reduced pages / visit, average time on site, as well as bounce rate.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome to Get Web Television Presence

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A new Web-based television program aims
to shine a light on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, sometimes referred to by
patients as "the living death" disease. The disease also is known by
its old name – and the one favored by many patients – myalgic
encephalomyelitis.

"This is a terrible, debilitating and essentially lifelong disease
which, like AIDS, suppresses the immune system. Our program has three
objectives: to comfort the suffering; to change attitudes among
physicians and medical institutions, and to implore the government to
provide critically needed research funds," Waroff said.

An estimated 1 million Americans are so severely impacted by the
disease that for months and years they are house-bound. Worldwide some
17 million have lost the ability to lead normal lives and work.

Often those who have suffered total physical collapse are ostracized
because of bigotry and ignorance. Institutions, like Britain's
National Health Service, treat M.E./CFS as a psychiatric disease, even
though patients are in great physical pain.

The disease knows no economic, geographic or social boundaries. Author
Laura Hillenbrand is the best-known American victim.

Our group is having 3 booths in the area today to offer educational material, support and to make people aware of this Invisible Illness.

I will be interviewed on the radio this morning by one of our local radio stations, BOBFM.

Saturday we hosted a presentation by Mr. Russ Howe, who is the co-author with Dr. Alison Bested in the book " Hope and Help for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia"

Our local MPP is representing us on the hill today in Toronto.

We are doing everything that we are able to do to make people more aware and to get financial support from the government.

Hello ME/CFS Members,

As you all know, our ME/CFS Awareness Day art show & live concert extravaganza is fast approaching on Thursday, May 12 at 7pm. I have been publicizing the event across second life and the folks at Virtual Ability have asked me to give a brief presentation (20-30 minutes long) about ME and the ME/CFS Centre on the day of the event. The plan is to give the presentation, field any questions the audience may have, and then invite them to come join us at the ME/CFS Centre for our ME/CFS Awareness Day celebrations.

I was hoping that one of our members could volunteer to help me give the presentation. I would begin with some general remarks about ME/CFS and about the work of the ME/CFS Centre in SL, and then the volunteer would step in to speak about his/her experiences with ME/CFS. I think it is important for those who are attending the talk to hear the perspective of someone who actually lives with the illness.

This is an important step in our efforts to reach out to the SL community at large. Please consider volunteering!

We are working to organize a party/event for ME/CFS Awareness day in
the Centre on May 12. We tried to book Noma Falta but have gotten no
response. Does anyone know any other performers who may draw a crowd?
We need to get this booked and promoted ASAP. I will send around
details for people to promote once we know who will be here.

This is a bit last minute because unfortunately Chloe has had to
return to the UK and won't be able to work for the Centre anymore, and
she was in charge of events management. But never fear, we are
organizing a stage and some other things for a good event--just need a
performer and some publicity. Please send around any ideas.

Yeltsin made wild promises that "for approximately six months, things
will be worse," but then the recovery would begin, and soon enough Russia
would be an economic titan, one of the top four economies in the world.28
This logic of so-called creative destruction resulted in scarce creation

economists praised as "entrepreneurial," proof that a capitalist
renaissance was indeed under way, one family heirloom and second-hand
blazer at a time.31 . . .

. . . Change was so rapid that it was impossible for Russians to keep
up. Workers often did not even know that their factories and mines had
been sold‹let alone how they had been sold or to whom (a profound
confusion I would witness a decade later in the state-owned factories of
Iraq). In theory, all this wheeling and dealing was supposed to create
the economic boom that would lift Russia out of desperation; in
practice, the Communist state was simply replaced with a corporatist
one: the beneficiaries of the boom were confined to a small club of
Russians, many of them former Communist Party apparatchiks, and a
handful of Western mutual fund managers who made dizzying returns
investing in newly privatized Russian companies. A clique of nouveaux
billionaires, many of whom were to become part of them group universally
known as "the oligarchs" for their imperial levels of wealth and power,
teamed up with Yeltsin's Chicago Boys and stripped the country of nearly
everything of value, moving the enormous profits offshore at a rate
of $2 billion a month. Before shock therapy, Russia had no millionaires;
by 2003, the number of Russian billionaires liad risen to seventeen,
according to the Forbes list.57

That is partly because, in a rare departure from Chicago School
orthodoxy, Yeltsin and his team did not allow foreign multinationals to
buy up Russia's assets directly; they kept the prizes for Russians, then
opened up the newly privatized companies, owned by so-called oligarchs,
to foreign share-holders. The returns were still astronomical. "Looking
for an investment that could gain 2,000 per cent in three years?" The
Wall Street Journal asked. "Only one stock market offers that hope . . .
Russia."58 Many investment banks, including Credit Suisse First Boston,
as well as a few deep-pocketed financiers, quickly set up dedicated
Russian mutual funds. . .

. . . In December 1994, Yeltsin did what so many desperate leaders have
done throughout history to hold on to power: he started a war. . .

. . . The scandal wasn't just that Russia's public riches were auctioned
off for a fraction of their worth‹it was also that, in true corporatist
style, they were purchased with public money. As the Moscow Times
journalists Matt Bivens and Jonas Bernstein put it, "a few hand-picked
men took over Russia's state-developed oil fields for free, as part of
a giant shell game in which one arm of government paid another arm." In
a bold act of cooperation between the politicians selling the public
companies and the businessmen buying them, several of Yeltsin's
ministers transferred large sums of public money, which should have gone
into the national bank or treasury, into private banks that had been
hastily incorporated by oligarchs.* The state then contracted with the
same banks to run the privatization auctions for the oil fields and
mines. The banks ran the auctions, but they also bid in them‹and sure
enough, the oligarch-owned banks decided to make themselves the proud
new owners of the previously public assets. The money that they put up
to buy the shares in these public companies was likely the same public
money that Yeltsin's ministers had deposited with them earlier.65 In
other words, the Russian people fronted the money for the looting of
their own country.

And this is what Benny Hill (Garbidge, a.k.a. Waker-Boy/Sock Puppet)
doesn't want you to know: the reality of neoliberalism.

The main points of neo-liberalism include:
1. THE RULE OF THE MARKET. Liberating "free" enterprise or private
enterprise from any bonds imposed by the government (the state) no
matter how much social damage this causes. Greater openness to
international trade and investment, as in NAFTA. Reduce wages by
de-unionizing workers and eliminating workers' rights that had been won
over many years of struggle. No more price controls. All in all, total
freedom of movement for capital, goods and services. To convince us this
is good for us, they say "an unregulated market is the best way to
increase economic growth, which will ultimately benefit everyone." It's
like Reagan's "supply-side" and "trickle-down" economics -- but somehow
the wealth didn't trickle down very much.

2. CUTTING PUBLIC EXPENDITURE FOR SOCIAL SERVICES like education and
health care. REDUCING THE SAFETY-NET FOR THE POOR, and even maintenance
of roads, bridges, water supply -- again in the name of reducing
government's role. Of course, they don't oppose government subsidies and
tax benefits for business.

3. DEREGULATION. Reduce government regulation of everything that
could diminsh profits, including protecting the environmentand safety on
the job.

4. PRIVATIZATION. Sell state-owned enterprises, goods and services to
private investors. This includes banks, key industries, railroads, toll
highways, electricity, schools, hospitals and even fresh water. Although
usually done in the name of greater efficiency, which is often needed,
privatization has mainly had the effect of concentrating wealth even
more in a few hands and making the public pay even more for its needs.

5. ELIMINATING THE CONCEPT OF "THE PUBLIC GOOD" or "COMMUNITY" and
replacing it with "individual responsibility." Pressuring the poorest
people in a society to find solutions to their lack of health care,
education and social security all by themselves -- then blaming them, if
they fail, as "lazy."

and the portfolios of the uber-rich.

here are the setting changes again for best movie viewing.

I will only touch on these briefly here, and will help out in more
detail in game for those who need it. I have slideshow pictures to
help all ready to go :)

- in prefs,sound and media/audio & video,make sure media is
enabled, and volume turned up
- enable media autoplay. (note: turn this off after movie is
finished if you wanted to avoid store privacy snooping)
- set away timeout to never
- change name tags to off
- after you are seated, change your sun settings to midnight
- please turn off cell phones and voice during movie :)
- text is fine. if text starts to fill the screen wait 3 seconds
for text to fade before adding your own message

- and dont forget the popcorn!

Some of you have met our new builder, Stephen (Simeon Lowenhart). He has been to a few meetings and discussed improvements to the Centre. Now it's time to give him your wish list for the perfect ME/CFS Centre as he is making a few prototypes of what the new revamped Centre will look like!
